You’ve got to love dogs. Their cute, playful energy makes them ideal pets. Many dog owners can agree that they want to give their pets a space that they love to be in. For those of us who like to let our dogs inside, keeping everything clutter free and clean can be tricky, but it’s not impossible. Whether you’re a first-time dog owner or a long-time dog lover, here are some ways to make your home both dog-friendly and guest-friendly.
Areas to Play
It’s no secret that young and old dogs are prone to spurts of energy. Not only that, it is necessary for a dog’s health for it to stay physically active. However, some dogs have been known to wreak havoc through the house if they feel pent up or are growing out of their puppy phase.
One of the easiest solutions to this is to let your house dog play in your backyard or to take them on a walk. However, this solution may not always be easy for those with HOA guidelines, small yards, no nearby parks, or wet and snowy weather.
Many dog owners have loved being able to dedicate a specific playroom for their pets. This space could simply be a penned-off area if your dog is small enough. Essentially, what you are creating is an open space filled with toys and a bed, and you can place various kinds of exercise equipment that you might find affordable for your little pup, too.
The purpose of the room is to give them a space where you can play with them. Feel free to make it a space they can go to sleep in the evening. This room can additionally become a space for the dog to be safely unattended if you leave the house for a few hours, or want to keep them occupied while you have guests.
Kennels
Some dog owners prefer to keep their dogs outside in a kennel or doghouse for the evening or while they’re away. However, we understand that you may want to let your pet stay inside. An indoor kennel may be the best option if you don’t want your dog sleeping on your bed or tearing up the house (if he or she is prone to that.) If you’re going to buy a kennel for your dog, you really should invest in something that isn’t going to feel too small but still fits nicely into your home.
Think of ways you can make your dog kennel more than just an empty crate that sits in your house. You can purchase industrial-style kennels made from wood, steel, and/or poly for water resistance. There are even kennels that double as pieces of functional and attractive furniture.
For example, you could purchase a small or medium-sized kennel that can be placed as an end table. An example of using a larger kennel would be to place it as an entertainment center top beneath a wall-mounted TV. Some kennels are even made with drawers. You can utilize these drawers to store all of your dog’s toys, and treats, or you can use them for your own items.
An indoor or outdoor kennel should be used sparingly when your dog isn’t sleeping in it. You don’t want your dog feeling restless or cooped up. We’d recommend limiting your uses of the kennel to times when it is only necessary. One such time could be when you have guests that may not have as much love for your furry friend as you do.
Preventing and Cleaning Messes
Having a separate room or kennel for your dog’s bed, toys, and food is one of the better methods of containing messes. Regularly cleaning this area will help to prevent odor and other bacterial issues. Let’s face it, though, dogs are messy even with all those factors contained. Cleaning up after them shouldn’t have to be stressful, though.
Muddy paws are a common issue in most households. On wet or snowy days, it may be best to keep a set of old towels by your door to use before you let your dog back inside. If your pet does track mud onto your carpets or furniture, your best method may be to let it dry first. You can then vacuum or wipe the dirt with a dry rag. You can then spot-clean what’s left with a vinegar and water solution or fabric and leather cleaner of your choice.
Despite the messes, the non-stop energy, and those big eyes always begging for more, dogs are pretty great. In fact, some of those things are what makes them such great companions. We hope these ideas will help you with your furry friend and make your home a comfortable place for everyone in it.
